ATP Swabs
UltraSnap ATP Swabs
Hygiena UltraSnap ATP swabs are rapid surface hygiene monitoring devices for verifying the cleanliness of brewery equipment, vessels, pipework, and food-contact surfaces after cleaning. They detect residual organic contamination in seconds, providing objective evidence that sanitation procedures have been effective before production resumes.
Hygiena UltraSnap ATP swabs are rapid surface hygiene verification devices designed for testing brewery equipment and food-contact surfaces after cleaning and sanitation. Used alongside compatible Hygiena luminometers, they allow brewers and beverage producers to confirm that vessels, transfer lines, fittings, packaging equipment, and other production surfaces are clean before being returned to service.
UltraSnap works by detecting adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the universal energy molecule found in all living cells and organic material. After swabbing a defined surface area, the device is activated to release a liquid-stable bioluminescent reagent that reacts with any ATP residue present. The reaction produces light, which is measured by a luminometer and reported in Relative Light Units (RLU) within approximately 10 seconds. Higher readings indicate increased levels of organic contamination such as yeast residue, sugars, proteins, beer deposits, or biofilm, while lower readings indicate effective cleaning and sanitation. This converts visual cleanliness checks into a measurable, repeatable hygiene verification process.
For breweries, UltraSnap ATP swabs are particularly useful for validating manual cleaning procedures and verifying external CIP effectiveness on tanks, valves, filler heads, sample ports, kegging systems, and other hard-to-clean areas where residue can accumulate. They provide a fast method for identifying weak points in sanitation programmes, investigating product quality issues, and building benchmark RLU data across the brewery. The liquid-stable chemistry provides reliable and reproducible results in demanding production environments, helping reduce the risk of returning poorly cleaned equipment to production. While ATP testing does not replace microbiological culture testing, UltraSnap provides a rapid first-line hygiene verification tool that supports HACCP programmes, improves cleaning validation, and reduces downtime between production cycles.
ATP Swabs are suitable for:
- CIP cycle validation across vessels, pipework, and heat exchangers
- Surface hygiene verification on contact equipment
- Rinse water testing to confirm cleaning effectiveness
- Identifying weak points in cleaning programmes
- HACCP and quality assurance documentation
- Audit preparation and demonstrating due diligence
- Troubleshooting suspected contamination issues
- Routine sanitation programme monitoring
