Distillation

Distillation System

The Distillation System is a fully integrated processing unit designed for the separation and refinement of liquid mixtures into high-purity fractions based on differences in boiling points. Built around a stainless steel and copper-clad pot still and column configuration, the system enables controlled vaporisation, condensation, and reflux to achieve precise separation of alcohol and volatile compounds. Key components include a boiler, column with internal plates or packing, condenser, and collection vessels, supported by instrumentation for accurate temperature and pressure control.

The system is suited to both craft and industrial applications, including the production of spirits, flavour extracts, and alcohol recovery from brewing by-products. Advanced control systems allow operators to regulate reflux ratios, temperature profiles, and cut points, ensuring consistent product quality across batches. With modular configurations such as dephlegmators, gin baskets, and automated PLC controls, the unit supports flexible production, improved energy efficiency, and scalable operation aligned with evolving production requirements.

Process Description

1. Heating and Vapour Generation
The wash or feed liquid is heated in the boiler until alcohol and other volatile compounds begin to vaporise. This controlled heat input initiates separation based on the differing boiling behaviour of the components within the mixture.

2. Separation and Reflux Control
Vapour rises through the column, where plates or packing increase contact between vapour and condensate to improve separation efficiency. Reflux control allows operators to manage purity, flavour carryover, and cut points according to the target spirit or recovered fraction.

3. Condensation and Collection
Once separated, the vapour is condensed back into liquid and directed into the appropriate collection vessels. This final stage supports consistent product capture, controlled fractioning, and repeatable output across craft or larger-scale distillation runs.

Product Quality

  1. 01

    Copper Contact Surfaces

Copper surfaces within the column and vapour path actively remove sulphur compounds and off-notes during distillation, supporting cleaner aroma profiles, improved mouthfeel, and a more refined, market-ready spirit character.

  2. 02

    Controlled Reflux

An integrated dephlegmator enables precise adjustment of reflux ratio, allowing operators to fine-tune separation efficiency, control spirit strength, and achieve consistent cut points across different distillation runs and product types.

  3. 03

    Flexible Spirit Profiles

Configurable column design, including adjustable plate count and operating parameters, allows production of a wide range of spirits, from lighter, high-purity distillates to heavier, character-driven profiles with greater congeners retention.

Control and Operation

  1. 04

    Automated Temperature Control

Automated temperature management across the boiler, column, and condenser ensures stable distillation conditions, reduces operator intervention, and improves repeatability between batches, supporting consistent product quality and process reliability.

  2. 05

    Real-time ABV monitoring

Inline alcohol measurement provides continuous visibility of distillate strength, enabling accurate and timely separation of heads, hearts, and tails, reducing product losses and ensuring precise control over final spirit composition.

  3. 06

    EX-rated design

Explosion-rated components and system design ensure safe operation in environments with flammable vapours, meeting industrial safety standards and allowing reliable use in alcohol production facilities with strict compliance requirements.
