Inline pasteurisation

Flash Pasteuriser

Throughput: 1,000 L/h

The Flash Pasteuriser is an inline HTST pasteurisation system for beer, RTDs, soft drinks, seltzers, and other carbonated or non-carbonated beverages. Product is heated, held at pasteurisation temperature, and rapidly cooled in a continuous process before packaging, avoiding the longer cycle times associated with batch pasteurisation. The system uses plate heat exchanger zones for heat recovery, final heating, holding, and cooling. PLC/HMI control manages pasteurisation settings, temperature control, alarms, and diversion logic, while hygienic hard piping and CIP compatibility support integration into commercial beverage lines.

Process description

1. Regenerative Preheating

Cold beer is pumped into the regeneration section of the plate heat exchanger (PHX), where it undergoes convective heat exchange with outgoing hot, pasteurised beer. This raises the product temperature to approximately 60-65 °C, improving overall thermal efficiency.

2. Heating and Holding

The preheated beer enters the heating zone, where it is rapidly brought to pasteurisation temperature, typically 72-75 °C, using controlled hot water circuits. It then flows through a holding tube, maintaining this temperature for a defined residence time to achieve the required pasteurisation units (PU) and ensure microbiological stability.

3. Regenerative Cooling and Final Cooling

Following pasteurisation, the hot beer returns to the regeneration section, transferring heat to incoming product and cooling to approximately 15-20 °C. It then passes through the final cooling zone, where chilled glycol or cold water reduces it to packaging temperature, typically 2-4 °C. The system operates under continuous monitoring, with automatic recirculation and alarms triggered by any temperature or pressure deviation.

Process Efficiency

  1. 01

    Continuous Pasteurisation

Inline operation treats product continuously before packaging, supporting higher throughput and reducing the waiting time associated with batch cabinet systems.

  2. 02

    Heat Recovery

Plate heat exchanger design recovers heat from outgoing pasteurised product to pre-heat incoming product, reducing heating and cooling demand.

  3. 03

    Rapid Heating and Cooling

HTST treatment limits thermal exposure while still achieving the required pasteurisation effect, helping protect product flavour and carbonation stability.

Control & Hygiene

  1. 04

    Precise PU Control

PLC/HMI control allows pasteurisation temperature, holding time, and process settings to be managed consistently across production runs.

  2. 05

    Automatic Diversion Protection

If process temperature or pressure deviates from set limits, product can be diverted to recirculation rather than passing forward to packaging.

  3. 06

    CIP-Compatible Design

Hygienic pipework, plate heat exchanger construction, and clean-in-place compatibility support routine sanitation without dismantling process sections.
